Desktop or not to desktop, that is not the question.

This article in PC Pro frames an ongoing confusion in the industry about how to move “core” productivity apps from the desktop to the cloud.

Part of the issue is technical resource, the sheer scale of the job to turn a suite of heavy local desktop apps into real cloud apps, and one of motivation, with Microsoft defending their position and the likes of Google, Oracle and Zoho attacking it from the cloud. The revenue model for the MS Office cash cow vs. the limited functionality but free online office services further muddies the waters, pitching the battle for who can get it right at what price?

But what of the customer? The article demonstrates that all they want is the best of both worlds at a reasonable cost; the customer in terms of deployment and management of a large user base (benefits of “The Cloud”) the end-user in terms of day to day use, a desktop experience when using the software (rich user experience, always available), without the hassle of well, the desktop user experience (install, configure, repair, upgrade…).

With cnap.office, our light “cloud” office suite that comes bundled with cnap.me, we are striving to addresses all of these key issues by removing the debate around web or desktop apps completely, offering the end-user the desktop experience, delivered from the web. And we are extending this philosophy to any application by enabling developers to develop apps like web apps that are delivered “instantly” to the desktop. This has been our aim from the start, and it is nice to see that while the big players are fighting on either side of the battle field for dominance, we can deliver what the customer wants now without compromise.

The ink Cartridge bombs discovered aboard cargo planes Friday October 29th in the UK at East Midlands Airport and Dubai have been traced back to Yemen, and in a worrying development it has been confirmed that at least one of them was carried on two passenger planes before finding its way onto a cargo plane.

The explosive used has been declared virtually undetectable by current security measures as it does not show up in scans and sniffer dogs cannot smell it. The substance PETN is colourless, odourless and therefore very difficult to detect. It is the same substance that last year’s Christmas Day bomber tried to detonate in his underpants on a passenger flight over Detroit in America.

Security sources in The US and UK have identified A Saudi-born bomb-maker, Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri – the man who constructed the underpants bomb and also said to be the main bomb-maker for al-Qaeda’s Yemeni branch as the culprit responsible for building these devices. The explosive was packed into computer printer cartridges and addressed to Synagogues in the Chicago area.

Britain’s security committee COBRA is meeting today at Downing Street with the Prime Minister David Cameron to discuss what new security measures need to be implemented to negate this new lethal and very worrying threat. In an interview this morning with the BBC Michael O’Leary dynamic head of Europe’s largest low cost carrier warned the UK Government not to over-react and get sucked into yet more disruptive and ineffective security measures for passenger planes. The UK is already just about the most difficult place to travel to and from citing the ridiculous nature of measures that take ladies lipsticks off them and water bottles that contain more than 100ml. He went on to say that this was a cargo problem so only cargo should be targeted.

Such was the demand to see the supergroup perform in their original line up for the first time in 16 years following Robbie Williams decision to rejoin the band.

The unprecedented demand at 9am this morning experienced by Cable and Wireless telecoms crashed their phone network and shut down Ticketmaster, Gigs and Tours, Ticketwire and Ticket Factory’s websites. As well as frantic fans suffering the frustration of not being able to get tickets substantial numbers of businesses and individuals have been left without their phone services with the resultant business losses estimated to run into millions.

Police have warned desperate Take That devotees to beware of unofficial sales sites as that expect criminal elements to take advantage of the disaster and offer desperate fans non-existent tickets through professional looking websites at inflated prices. Already tickets are appearing on E-Bay and similar auction sites at prices akin to several times the face value and it is thought likely that a number are scams by criminal gangs to steal money from fans going to any lengths to secure their seats.

Meanwhile telecoms and internet service providers engineering staff are fighting a desperate battle to restore service to their clients.

Marbella’s former head of town planning Juan Antonio Roca is alleged to have been the mastermind behind the scandal. Roca a friend and business associate of the late Jesus Gill the convicted embezzler and disgraced president of Atletico Madrid is also implicated in the aptly named “Goldfinger” investigation which centres on the sale and redevelopment of the former home of James Bond actor Sean Connery.

Roca who allegedly was on the dole in the early 1990’s before moving to Marbella, has in recent time as town planner amassed a reported fortune in excess of 136 million Euro’s, all this whist on a civil servants pay. His portfolio is said to include an art collection put at 27 million, three Palaces in Madrid, country estates in Cadiz and Los Alcazares, hotels in Huelva and Los Alcazares plus pure bred horses, numerous cars and jewellery.

He shares the dock with three ex Mayor’s, many former Town Hall Councillors, Businessmen, Lawyers and Construction Magnate’s. Following the dissolution of the Town Council by the National Government in 2006 over 20,000 portfolios have been prepared for presentation to the court.

The court will be told that the case stems from the 1991when Jesus Gill gained control of Marbella Town Hall and his shameful behaviour from that point has led to this disgrace. This high profile case will over the coming year will highlight a prime example of what fuelled Spain’s property boom in recent years and it is unlikely to be the last. It is expected that many mini Marbella’s will soon come to light as the drive to clean up the system and restore Spain’s battered image gathers momentum.

A second strike by London Underground workers has added to the woes of London commuters. RMT and TSSA members walked out at 18.30 BST yesterday for 24 hours in protest at plans to cut 800 ticket staff jobs. London Transport claim that 75% of services are running normally but generalchaos is predicted judging by past events. The Banking community seems to have escaped lightest with normal services assured on the DLR

However faulty trains and signals are being blamed for disruption on London Overground. Problem services to watch out for are as follows

Bakerloo – trains running between Elephant & Castle and Queens Park

District – suspended between Earls Court and Edgware Road; Earls Court and Kensington Olympia; Turnham Green and Richmond; Barking and Upminster

Hammersmith and City – suspended between Shepherds Bush Market and Hammersmith; Baker Street and Barking

Jubilee – suspended between Wembley Park and Stanmore

Metropolitan – suspended between Baker Street and Aldgate; Harrow-on-the-Hill and Watford

Northern – special service operating, but some stations closed

Piccadilly – suspended between Uxbridge and Finsbury Park

Victoria – suspended between Seven Sisters and Walthamstow Central

Waterloo and City – special service operating

Reaction from government circles have been swift and predictable with calls for further strikes to be banned. Diehard militant union leaders from another age are cited by London Mayor Boris Johnson as causing a “Stunted Up Strike” saying that the leadership are aware that we are ready and willing to negotiate at any time. The Mayor went on to state that not only was the strike a disaster for Londoners but also for the union membership as well.

Claiming support from the membership was solid and widespread Bob Crow of the RMT stated “The cuts to ticket offices, and safety-critical station staffing levels, that RMT members are fighting to prevent in the action today are the same cuts that Boris Johnson opposed before he was elected London mayor.

He went on to point out that his remit was protecting his members jobs and also claimed that standing up for Tube safety is hypocrisy of the highest order on the part of the mayor as his staff cutting proposals would only endanger London commuters.

Transport for London has laid on 100 extra busses to try to eliminate the chaos and also provided for 10,000 extra river journeys.

The 85 year old star of Films such as Some like it Hot where he Co-Stared with Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemon, The Defiant Ones for which he received an Oscar Nomination, Houdini, Trapeze, Spartacus, The Boston Strangler and The Vikings died peacefully in his sleep according to family members.

Curtis, born Bernard Schwartz son of Easter European émigrés on June 3rd 1925 and didn’t speak any English until the age of 4 acted in over 120 films but did not always feel appreciated by Hollywood. He stumbled into a life of drug and alcohol abuse but to his great credit pulled himself together in the early 1980’s and went on to carve out a new career as an artist, some of his canvasses went for many thousands of dollars.

At one stage of his long and varied career in the 1970’s he left the USA moving to Great Britain where he stared alongside Roger Moore in a racy TV series called The Persuaders.

Jamie Lee Curtis his actress daughter from the first of his 6 marriages has accorded her father this tribute saying he “leaves behind a legacy of great performances in movies and in his paintings”.

“He leaves behind children and their families who loved him and respected him and a wife and in-laws who were devoted to him. He also leaves behind fans all over the world,” she added.

.

Tony Curtis was married to actress Janet Leigh, with whom he had actress daughter Jamie Lee Curtis

Sir Roger has also paid tribute to his former colleague, calling him “a fine actor”.

“We had a lot of laughs together for about 15 months, working together every day. He was great fun to work with, a great sense of humour and wonderful ad libs. We had the best of times.”

Curtis is survived by his wife, Jill Vandenberg Curtis, and six children.

A landslide has occurred in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca reportedly trapping as many as 1,000 people according to Governor Ulises Ruiz.

The disaster occurred when a piece of hillside about 650 feet wide (200 meters) collapsed early Tuesday morning. Thousands of tons of mud and debris cascaded down onto about 300 houses.

According to eyewitness reports about 50 homes in the Santa Maria Tiahuitotepec Municipality were completely engulfed. Emergency workers with heavy earthmoving equipment are being transported rapidly to the area along with military personnel and police.

Senor Ruiz stated that he was optimistic that the emergency services would be in time to rescue those trapped by this catastrophe. He went on to explain that due to heavy rain in the area in recent days a number of rivers had overflowed their banks and this was hampering the progress of the rescue teams which explains the criticism of locals who are complaining about the speed of rescue.

Tropical Storm Matthew appears to be the culprit as far as the poor weather goes and it is of concern that it seems to have stalled over the area. Many of the local houses are constructed on the edge of ridges in this steeply terrained area some 2000 feet above sea level.

a state of emergency was declared on Monday for Oaxaca de Juarez, San Felipe Tejalapam, San Jacinto Amilpas, San Lorenzo Cacaotepec, San Pablo Etla, Santa Lucia del Camino and Tlalixtac de Cabrera areas as more rain is forecast.

New research has shown that the most popular time for on line shopping is Wednesday afternoon when workers are feeling low after lunch and facing the prospect of another 2.5 days before the weekend break. 2pm and 4pm seem to be the most favoured times online shops record.

It is estimated that a 52% increase in buying activity is noticed in the afternoon compared with the morning. The Wednesday phenomenon is attributed to what is euphemistically called “The Hump Of The Week” and in syndrome terms is similar to Monday Morning Blues.

Late Sunday evening is now also being identified with heavier shopping patterns as more and more people counter the Monday Morning feeling with a little on line retail therapy. On line shopping now almost seems to be transcending into a form of entertainment observers report.

Researchers are concerned that due to the entertainment dynamic people are not operating in their normal cautious zone learned over many years of bargain hunting but going in for instant gratification. This dynamic is further concerning researchers who believe that shoppers are overspending and thus storing up shoppers guilt after the event.

On line retailers are naturally monitoring and collating this information and increasingly building this knowledge into their marketing practices. Retailers expect that the continuing trend models being developed will undoubtedly feed through into greater profitability.

Reports in the mainstream media seem to portray an image of the rank and file Labour Party supporter being marched away into the political wilderness by a combination of Union Barron’s and party leaders shouting Left as the troops march into oblivion.

Commentators are widely describing the election of Ed, instead of David, as Labour’s IDS moment, or even a Michael Foot renaissance.

Certainly the odds and results all the way through the electoral process, seemed to determine that the Miliband who would lead the party (and hence at some point the UK Government) would be the vastly more experienced David. However as the more left leaning candidates were dropped, it seems that their supporters rallied behind Ed, with the resulting surprise to all but a few die hard’s of Ed narrowly pipping his brother to the leadership.

Political pundits are now trying to determine the implications for the ideological balance of the UK and its effect on confidence in the business sector.

The reality is that if the coalition were to suddenly collapse Britain could be controlled by socialists in the near future and this would be of great concern to the likes of the IMF and Britain’s trading partners.

Speculation is growing that Ed’s brother David could quit politics altogether resulting in yet more damage to the party.

All eyes are now on the new leader’s speech to the party conference tomorrow where it is expected that Mr Miliband will clarify his vision for taking the party forward, and on what platform he will build his opposition.

Brazil, who according to Goldman Sachs has the most overvalued currency of all the major trading nations, has cried foul in the increasingly volatile world currency markets.

The finance minister, Guido Mantega, has stated that a war seems to be developing with nation states such as Japan, Taiwan and Korea all attempting to de value their own currencies in recent weeks. They are by no means alone as evidence mounts that developed economies are increasingly attempting to improve competitiveness in global markets.

Both Switzerland and Japan are known serial interventionalists but under the strains of the continuing crisis in global markets it appears that more countries are taking this route. Senor Mantega’s remarks may sound inflammatory but recent swings in currency markets would appear to support his stance.

With the US $ now largely undefended and the continual drip drip of bad news out of the States volatility looks set to remain. Certainly it is difficult to see what could change in the short term now that the dreaded month of October is almost upon here.

What seems likely is that by making this statement Brazil is laying a marker down and in effect saying play this game at your peril. As one of the world’s fastest growing economies this enormous country, the powerhouse of South America is ready to fight its corner and not be cowed by the old order.
